CTF Urges Government to Speed Passage of Protecting Taxpayers and Revoking Pensions of Convicted Politicians Act

Author: Aaron Wudrick 2015/02/05

OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) today applauded the passage last night by the House of Commons of Bill C-518, the Protecting Taxpayers and Revoking Pensions of Convicted Politicians Act, which will see politicians convicted of serious crimes lose their taxpayer-funded pensions.

“We are pleased that our elected representatives in the House of Commons have passed this bill across party lines by an overwhelming margin of 258-13,” said CTF Federal Director Aaron Wudrick. “But it still needs to be passed by the Senate in order to become law, and with the clock ticking towards the end of the Parliamentary session, any delay could result in the bill dying.”

“Canadians should not be on the hook for the pensions of those who abuse their powers of public office,” continued Wudrick. “We strongly urge the government and in particular the Senate to ensure that this bill becomes law before the next election.”
